At first, it might sound like just another fad, but there’s more to it when it comes to the benefits of a stand-up desk.
Studies show that even when you do some physical activity, sitting for extended periods of time is harmful to your health.
According to a recent study, too much sitting is associated with an increased risk of:
- colon cancer
- endometrial cancer
- lung cancer
And let’s not mention other symptoms such as:
- weight gain
- lower back pain
- fatigue
- difficulty sleeping
- swollen ankles
Needless to say that if your body isn’t working well, nothing else does. Including your productivity.
Standing work desk benefits
When we think about productivity, the effects of sitting all day aren’t beneficial either.
It leads to decreased social interaction, lack of focus, and productivity loss.
A study showed that call center workers who could stand for periods of time using a stand-up desk made more calls throughout the day.
In high schools, standing desks increased students’ engagement and cognitive performance.
Standing up more
Some offices and even schools are slowly adopting standing desks.
They’re still isolated initiatives. However, as the health benefits of a standing desk become better known, you’ll be seeing them more frequently.
While not all of us have access to standing workstations yet, you can already find affordable alternatives for yourself.

Have in mind that you won’t see the results of standing up more right away.
Allow your body to get accustomed to your work position.
It may even feel uncomfortable at first because of the different posture.
Yet, once you break up with the old habit, you’ll be glad about the effects.
